🎬The Blacklist is an American Thriller Series streaming on Netflix.
I only started watching it last year (after months of having it on my watchlist, thanks to @keeks.ng ‘s weekly episode excitement, and I’ve been in an on and off relationship with it. Largely due to unavailability caused by adulting.

🍿 It’s based on an ex-US government agent, now turned criminal and top on the FBI’s most wanted list, Mr Raymond “Red” Reddington and his blacklist of high ranking criminals.

Our relationship is back on and I thought to share this as a recommendation if you’re looking for a solid series to watch.
Warning, I am far behind and just in its 2nd Season, so you OG watchers better not spoil what Raymond “Red” Reddington’s true relationship is with Elizabeth Keen.

🎞️With all the action, drama and political power play, my favourite episode so far is S2:E9 “Luther Braxton (No.21) - it was the first time the series gave me an all action, no play villain on Mr Reddington’s list.

🕴🏾P.S. I watched the medical drama New Amsterdam first. And as someone deeply in love with Dr Max Goodwin, the character played by Ryan Eggold, I have been unable to figure out why on earth we have an imposter playing Tom Keen and threatening to ruin the charming “how can I help” image of Dr Max😭.

▶️Seasons 1-9 are currently streaming on Netflix, with the final 10th season available from January 26th.

🎬I originally intended to just post with a caption of at most “This is highly recommended”.
Or how do you begin to put into words a carefully thought out story borne out of Nigeria’s movie industry, without spoiling it for those yet to watch?

🍿Breath of Life is a feel good movie that tells the story of life and its purpose through a former Reverend, Mr Timi, as narrated by his house manager, Elijah. We get to see how a religious man could have it all in one minute, and get to live with the consequences of his decision the next. It’s a story like no other.

🎭In its first few minutes, I had to pause briefly to be sure I had the correct movie playing.
The narration was impressive, you can tell that everyone who worked on and in this movie did so with clarity and intentionality. It reminded me of the thought that went into the 2022 Nollywood movie, 4-4-44 (also on prime video and which you should watch, if you haven’t by the way).
From the initial futuristic scene to Mr Timi, his little daughter’s carefreeness, location, to the onscreen chemistry. I’m not a pro movie critic, but this is a movie lover’s delight to watch.

🤔Ignorable, but still… What I did not understand is why the scene of Chief Amarchree being in the church did not come before that of Elijah meeting him in his home. Because Elijah’s expression when he met the Chief in his home was that of someone who’d already seen him before, and their brief exchange of words would confirm that.

👌🏾It really doesn’t matter anyway, it still is a beautiful story and an even more impeccable delivery.

⏯️|▶️Highly recommended and it’s a play for me.

🎬Blood Vessel is an (Ijaw?) movie that is different (in Nollywood terms). And if we’re being honest, a really good story but maybe just wasn’t executed smoothly. If you ignore the latter, and are able to watch to the end, you’ll see it’s still a good movie despite its shortcomings.

🎭I started out wondering why there was a disconnect between the acting and the actors voices till I checked and saw I was watching English dubbed and not in original audio. Because of the local language and heavy south-south pidgin, there’s the English and original Ijaw Language to choose from. The moment I switched to Ijaw, that problem vanished.

🍿It’s a story about the events that take place on a ship when a group of unlikely locals bond together as stow aways in a desperate attempt to flee their community’s police/armed men in the aftermath of a protest against oil pollution.
The movie has a heavy sad undertone, which you’ll notice with the underscore that adds drama to the scenes. The subtitle even calls it “Sad wailing music”.

▶️ | ⏩ This may become unpopular, but I actually prefer the shockers the movie gave as it came to an end.

LEO
🎬Netflix’s animated comedy, Leo, is a simple, yet beautiful story about an elementary class’ pet lizard and all of the wonderful life nuggets he has to share with the kids. When he accidentally learns he has a year to live, he takes it upon himself to make the year count by encouraging each child to be the best version of themselves while they also prepare for a class competition.

🎭It’s a musical comedy, but not to worry if you don’t love musicals, this was a feel good comedy with even more conversations than a true musical would have.

❤️I know I’m late to the party, so for those of you who’ve watched Leo, hope you enjoyed it as much as I did 🫶🏾.

🎬I first read about Editi Effiong’s The Black Book and the covid19 challenges that went into the production of the movie on his Twitter (now known as X ofcos) and the movie did show that a lot of effort was put to turn the plot to a movie of world class standard, enjoyable to watch and leaving people talking about its parallels with the Nigerian reality.
I appreciate the veteran ensemble this movie had. From Alex Usifo (I don’t think I’ve watched this man in any movie since the days of weekday afternoon movie times on NTA and AIT) to my darling Bimbo Akintola.

🍿Okay to the plot itself in “shoki” (Yoruba word for brief 😂). A father takes it upon himself to avenge the wrongful killing of his son by law enforcement agencies.
But what you will not expect is the backstory it dwells into. I already had my wooden stick out, eyes blazing ready to go on protest to seek justice. Only to find out this could be a Nollywood twisted version of John Wick.

🎭The movie score was amazing. The emotions displayed were raw. The scene that almost made me spill water on my sofa, the slaps! I dare not say more 🥲.
The action was a bit slow for me and weren’t engaging enough to keep my eyes glued to the screen. I found myself distracted through those scenes.
I also thought the whole shooting into air was a bit too dramatic. But maybe that’s how these people do in reality 😩.

▶️An overall impressive Nollywood feat and a play for me.

🫣Firstly, I apologize for running my mouth before watching Barbie, I get it now! I really do.

🍿It was unexpectedly good to watch and deserving of all the positive praises it’s getting. Not only does Mattel’s marketing team deserve a raise, but so does whoever introduced the idea of a narrator. The narrator’s input about Mattel’s casting choice on Margot Robbie was hilarious.

🎬Although I wasn’t initially a fan of Margot and Ryan as Barbie and Ken, it couldn’t have been any other. Margot has the most beautiful and genuine Barbie smile ever. And Ryan was so perfect, it seemed like he’d been waiting for this role his entire career 😄.
I especially loved how unserious yet intense the story is, the comic-feel to it was just brilliant. Then the movie name-dropping in the comedic lines? *chefs kiss*
And then, opting for satire to address the criticism the Barbie dolls have had over the years, surely deserves a thumbs up from me.

🙌🏾One of my memorable scenes will be the real world beach scene with Barbie and Ken on rollerblades . The underlying message of how different they perceived the sudden attention they’re receiving based on their eyepopping colourful outfits goes to show this is not just about the fanfare and it’s a movie with a serious undertone.

👯‍♀️As someone who’s new to the Barbie world because of my “grand-babies” (the Barbies owned by my toddler daughter), I may have made the mistake of going over to a Barbie exhibition at my local science museum before seeing Barbie. Now that the movie has done a good job of selling the dream house to me, I’ll be off to immerse myself in Telus Spark’s Barbie: A Cultural Icon. This time, alone 😁.

🫶🏾And lastly I live you with my rewritten line said by Ruth Handler (creator of Barbie, played by Rhea Pearlman) “Ideas could live forever, but humans not so much”.

🎬Truly incredible storytelling! No breaks, no leaving me with the job of interpreting between the complexity of periods interwoven into different scenes or being plunged into an investigative mission of connecting the wild dots.

🎞️Just deeply immersive, thought-provoking storytelling that got me drawn into what may have been the complex mind of the brilliant physicist, J.R. Oppenheimer, credited as being responsible for the design of the Atomic Bomb.
And I do not use the word “thought-provoking” loosely. Although Oppenheimer is said to not have regretted his part in the creation of the atomic bomb, his most famous quote has come to be “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds” (-words from a Hindu sacred text)

🍿I watched Oppenheimer on an IMAX screen. Although I’ve been told (repeatedly), that to truly enjoy Christopher Nolan’s master plan on this movie, you need to watch Oppenheimer in a 70mm IMAX screen (I don’t understand this and truly do not know the difference 😒).
Here’s the not so fun part, there are about only 30 of these in the world 🤭.

🎭Oppenheimer is a period piece and as you can tell from all of the Barbenheimer posts/memes scattered over the internet, it may not be a movie for glitz-loving movie watchers (I’m giving a full disclosure now, so nobody comes to rant in the DM after 😫).

🎬Let’s chat about Gangs of Lagos, because what is there to evaluate of a movie that delivered without fail?

🎞️Every once in a while, Nollywood does a self-reflection to give its viewers a blockbuster that can go head-to-head with some of Hollywood’s finest, while keeping the content focused on the Nigerian environment. The result of one of such, is Jade Osiberu’s Gangs of Lagos.

🍿I love how the movie dives right into its title and gives you an introduction of what to expect from Gangs of Lagos.
Gangs of Lagos gives an insight into surviving the street smart life in Isale-Eko (Downtown Lagos), through the lens of one of its own.

🎭The child actors were phenomenal.
Kudos to the casting director, for pairing Small mummy (Young Gift) with Adesua Etomi (Gift/Ebun). Their head movements and overall body language were in sync.

A surprise feature was seeing Big Brother Africa’s Tayo Faniran (Nino) and Singer, Chike (Ify).
Every actor in Gangs of Lagos understood their assignment, such that if you notice any flaw, it will have no effect on the overall quality of the movie.

🫡 Tobi Bakre (Obalola)’s monologue was one of the highlights for me. The brilliance at which it was delivered almost felt like I was allowed into the script writer’s thought process of the background and intention of each character Obalola soliloquized over, while still keeping me grounded in the movie itself.

I expect a sequel. And not just because of how Gangs of Lagos ended, but because Obalola’s monologue may be an indication that Bakre’s character is actually in a future time frame, narrating/ reminiscing on the events of his past (which we see in this first instalment of Gangs of Lagos).
I’ll be disappointed if Greoh Studios and Jade Osiberu close the chapter on Gangs of Lagos.

😎Fun fact: The stunt coordinator for Gangs of Lagos, Tough Bone (directortough on IG) also worked with actor, Jimi Odukoya, for his fighting sequence in The Woman King.

🎬First thing’s first, who else almost went deaf because of the sounds from that opening scene? 🧏🏾‍♀️

🎭 When compared to the first 2 movies, Chapter 3 - Parabellum was my least favourite. The writers must have heard me, because Chapter 4 is made of cinematography goodness.
It was impossible to take my eyes off the screen, else I risk missing out on a really good slice, punch or shoot.

🍿The movie starts off with the obvious, the high table is angry! And John Wick as it’s the norm since the end of Chapter 2, now has a price for his head. That’s all the synopsis you need to know before watching for yourself why every single blow was a hit back to back 🫡. It’s what movie dreams should be made of.

🥷I haven’t watched an action movie this good since Covid came and ruined everything. I even had tears of joy while watching those open roof scenes. Middle of the traffic circle, dragon’s breath shotguns during the open roof and those damn stairs 🤯. Did I mention that amazingly satisfying “bullet”?? The summary here is that every single action sequence was a hit. There was no moment to catch my breath.

🤺And can we talk about how they tell us to never judge a book by its cover in the scenes involving Killa (the golden teeth man) ??? Okay no spoiling again, I’m not even sure I spoiled anything. But still upon still… 🫡

🫡Kudos to the cast and crew of John Wick - the loving husband and devoted pawrent, this franchise has been nothing but beautiful. I’m here hoping for a chapter 5 or better still, I need a chapter before the 1st, a prequel. As chapter 4 gives us a slight taste of what could have happened prior to John’s retirement from the underworld.

🍿And as for the ending scene, well the director says it’s up to us to decide how we want the ambiguity of that to go 🌚. And oh, hang around for a beautiful post credit scene too.

Sad to know Lance Reddick passed away before the movie was released. May his soul rest in peace 🙏🏾

#throwbackthursday Post 💃🏽
📢 John Wick : Chapter 4’s official release date is tomorrow here in Canada (some cinemas have showtimes for today) and in the spirit of #TBT , I thought to share my thoughts on Mr Jonathan.

📍Full disclosure, I only got to watch chapters 1 to 3 late last year, so I consider myself a late bloomer to the franchise. Lol

🎞️Down to what we know so far on why Wick went on a killing rage in the first chapter.

1. This was no ordinary dog!!!
2. His wife died.
3. His wife, knowing that she would die and he needed a companion, gifted him the dog.
4. Spoilt rich kid went to look for trouble first.
5. When spoilt rich kid's dad came to know he was dealing with Baba Yaga (the one you sent to get rid of the Boogeyman) and agrees that his son is a f00l for waking trouble up, why not drive down in person to plead or just give up his son earlier, but nope he decides to move mad.
6. Then, if village people are not after this rich kid's dad tell me why he decided to call John Wick (who btw spared his life earlier), to report himself for killing John Wick's ally.

Please John Wick did not k!ll all of them enough 🤣🤣🤣. I’m just kidding 🤭.

🍿However, we then learn through chapters 2 to 3 , the repercussions of Wick’s rage. Why he probably shouldn’t have forced his way out of retirement and more about The Table and why rules separate the people who sit on the table from the animals.

🤺Chapter 4 should be picking up from where chapter 3’s betrayal ended.
I look forward to seeing how the guys who pick the crumbs from underneath this all too important table, deal with the fall out of what started out as a simple lesson to a spoilt rich kid.

🎬What can you expect when you watch AntMan and The Wasp: Quantumania? Let’s start with the obvious, Marvel wasn’t joking when they added Quantumania to the title.
The whole point of Quantumania which officially kicks off Phase 5 of the MCU is in the post credit scenes (2).
But you do have to watch the movie itself to understand the post credits. Then there’s the suggestion by the movie itself, that your mightiest heroes have been outnumbered with what I’ll very much like to call Thanos, v2.0.

❗️And secondly, if you haven’t, please watch Loki to understand “existence” and why most of Quantumania takes place outside of time.
But this doesn’t mean you will not have questions. Especially if you’re not a devout Marvel Comic reading fan, like me 🫣.

And like true MCU fans know, the pointers (not answers) to most questions you have about the MCU are in the comics, you’ll just need to either wait to see how it plays out or devote your time to all the theories and speculations scattered around the web.

🍿It looks like with The Ant-man now being a part of the larger MCU, the Ant-man movies will never be the same anymore 😥.
It started out promising, until the whole deep dive into Janet Pym’s quantum realm, then Kang? And the delayed timing of Antman/the wasp’s resizing abilities?
Quantumania lacked glue to make the pieces in this movie whole. But then again, this is just my personal view.

You’ll probably give a nod of approval to Kang’s larger connection in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe than because of all the fighting that takes place in the Quantum realm’s world of CGI.

🫡On a side note, Thanos just needs his own origin story at this point. He makes all these other supervillains seem like child’s play.

🎟️|📺 I saw Quantumania in realD 3D, only because all the good seats were already taken in the 2D screens.
I feel like it’s only the possibilities of what’s in store for the MCU and the questions that needs answers that got me excited. Other than that, I could have just waited to watch this on Disney+ rather than the big screen 😢

🤔Wondering why a movie is titled Plane and not “The Plane” or even any other wording? Yeah, wonder much more because the movie itself will still leave you wondering why they decided to go with “Plane”. Lol

🎬Anyway, Plane is a 2023 movie starring Gerard Butler as the pilot of a plane that makes an emergency landing (falls from the sky? 👀) on a dangerous rebel/terrorist filled land, due to some “Manifest” weather vibes. The Pilot has to then work with a supposedly dangerous prisoner (Mike Cotler) being extradited for murderous charges, to free the rest of the passengers that have been kidnapped by these rebels. And this, ladies and gentlemen is the synopsis the trailer tells you and is all you need to know about the movie too.

👍🏾 I do love how this cuts to the chase, apart from a moment of background into the Captain’s personal life, the story of Plane starts quite early on and we’re indeed reminded that lightening and Planes don’t seem to go hand in hand.

🍿Well, I was a bit let down as I thought the action bit was a bit flat and the story was all too well very Hollywoody predictable. For a movie titled simply as Plane, I did not think I saw much of what the Plane was. The acting was for sure great and it was an interesting watch. But I cannot help but feel it’s a collection of recycled stories that we’ve seen before 🫠.
And I thought we had quite a few number of passengers on board too.

🎟️Anyway, Plane is still showing in select cinemas and on movie streaming sites. And while the acting was superb, it’s just another forgettable action movie from Hollywood for me.

🎬 Brotherhood (Nollywood, 2022) tells the story of twin brothers, raised by their struggling aunt after being orphaned at an early age. An implied years of hardship and street hustling later, they are now adults with each living on the opposite side of the law.

🧐 Here’s one of the first things that caught my attention, the use of stethoscopes during that sting operation. I may be ignorant here as I don’t understand it, but I need answers.

🍿I enjoyed watching O.C. Ukeje in bad boy role. Also, I found it refreshing to watch the use of well established actors as the brothers’ parents, considering their very limited appearance.

And perhaps one of the favourite parts I enjoyed watching was the embedded narrative used when Kala was introducing members of his own gang and their role in his proposed heist.

Most of the acting was poor, a few people may also have thought they were extras on a stage play 👎🏽
Then the police car that flipped over was already badly dented before its actual flip, but that can be overlooked.
However, what cannot be overlooked is that blood was actually thrown on the actors, as opposed to being shot at and the blood dripping out. That was very poor on the productions end.
I also felt like some of the action sequences during the robbery was slow. But what do I know?

⁉️ I’m not doubting the Naija hype as you tend to overlook flaws when you watch a movie on the big screen, compared to on a smaller (up close) screen. But still, I am highly disappointed because I looked forward to watching and being part of the hype.

▶️/⏭️ Although, Ronke Oshodi-Oke’s acting was good and Basketmouth was impressive for the few scenes they both showed up in, Tobi Bakre basically had to carry the success of the rest of the cast’s poor acting on his head. He definitely would not have been paid enough for how he brilliantly played his part as Akin/Kala.
He’s the only reason I was able to watch through to the end. And so his efforts don’t go to waste, I can grudgingly recommend that you may want to watch Brotherhood, even though I unfortunately think it’s a passable movie.

🎬 Shanty Town is a crime limited series that gives a raw and hard view into the Lagos hoodrat life, gang violence and the quest to get out of it all.

🍿 5mins in, and I screamed “Yes!” This is it, this is what I’ve been asking Nollywood-Netflix to give me.
Expect explicit nudity, this is Netflix after all. But not to worry, unlike some other Nollywood-Netflix productions, this fits into the general storyline. And, there are body doubles in Nollywood too!

🕴🏾Still, grab your popcorn people, even though I doubt you’ll be able to divert attention off the screen, because Chidi Mokeme and Ini Edo ‘s acting were top notch. Ah, Chidi Mokeme!!!

👌🏾Brethren, there’s a reason why we revered the Actors and Actresses of old school Nollywood back in the day and Chidi Mokeme tells you exactly why.
These people understood what acting was about and the importance of showing viewers the quality of their work.

🗣️Representation does matter, no matter how little we think of it and I thought it was ingenious to have Inem and Ene fluently speak the Ibibio language on screen.

😐Mercy Eke wasn’t bad, I thought she was bland in the initial scenes, but then she rose to the task afterwards. BUT!!! someone better tell Peter PSquare to not bother us inside movies, except he’s an Artist singing. Because what in the mediocrity, looking to ruin my movie experience was that?

🎭 Thumbs up to Nollywood’s impressive pyrotechnic and special effects. You really need a good story and a cast and crew who are determined to bring your vision to life and you’re on your way to make we “Professionally Unserious Movie Watchers” happy.

🧐 On special effects, in quite a few scenes in one of the episodes, the tattoo/scarring effect on Scar did not properly blend in with his skin. That really stood out and was a bit distracting.

⁉️Also, This could have easily been a 2-part movie rather than the 30mins short, 6-episode long limited series. Since they’ve set the stage for a return season, I forgive them on this.

💜Kaleidoscope is a limited series that gives viewers the opportunity to solve a puzzle by putting together the pieces of events leading up to a heist and figuring out who the real master thief is.
💚You’re given a chance to enter the timeline of the series in any order. This means you can begin the series long before the heist was ever thought of, or after the heist is over. The bottom line is, you either let Netflix shuffle the order for you, or watch by taking advantage of the exact timeline of the series (as listed below).

💛It’s a fun way of watching the series and trying to put the pieces in order. It doesn’t matter how you watch it, I however recommend that you always start with the 1min “Black” and end with the “finale” White episode. This way, you’re left guessing what really happened on the day of the heist and who the master thief really is.

🧡The series seems more focused on life before and after the heist itself, so it could be a tad bit bland in some areas.

💙There are certainly movies/tv series that give us this disorderly way into their timelines today, leaving the choice to viewers could be the production’s way of promoting yet another movie based on a heist.

❤️It’s still an interesting watch nonetheless, and an excellent way to pass time. So it’s a ▶️ for me.

🤍Episodes according to how they appear in the show’s timeline:
Black - 1 min introductory session
Violet - 24 years before the heist
Green - 7 years before the heist
Yellow - 6 weeks before the heist
Orange - 3 weeks before the heist
Blue - 5 days before the heist
White - The heist
Red - The morning after the heist
Pink - 6 months after the heist

Avatar: The Way of Water follows Jake Sully and Ney'tiri as they have formed a family and are doing everything to stay together. However, they must leave their home and explore the regions of Pandora. When an ancient threat resurfaces, Jake must fight a difficult war against the humans. (Google).

🎭 My Take: Disney has until May to respond to this breathtaking display of what life under the sea is like.
The way of water was very literal. We spent 3hrs and 12mins under the sea fam.

🍿You cannot help but watch this magnificent display of wonder and not be plagued by the lingering thought of what to expect and if a beloved character isn’t about to join Eywa. Because good things never last in the movie world.
Here’s what you need to know though, the sky people came for revenge, 4-fingered Jake Sully kind of revenge. And they will not give up until it’s served cold.

🤔I honestly feel like the budget was quite ambitious for a post pandemic movie considering movie theatres are yet to return to their pre-pandemic capacity. But what’s my own in Cameron’s financial matters?

❓❔Were there painfully long scenes that could have been cut short or ridden of altogether? Yes!

⏳Was the over a decade wait for Way of Water worth it? I personally don’t think so and could be the subject for another conversation entirely.

▶️| ⏩And all of the bad press hovering around James Cameron aside, this was a really good and aesthetically appealing movie. And I loved how the stage was set for the next instalment.

🎟️ Avatar: The Way of Water is still showing in theatres worldwide. I saw this in IMAX 3D which made the experience even better.

🧟‍♀️First of all, please forgive me for putting in a late post on Wednesday (8-episode Tv Series 2022).
Like the titular character makes it known, “I find social media to be a soul-sucking void of meaningless affirmation.” 🤭

🎬 Wednesday follows the sarcastic and witty life of teenage girl from the popular Addams Family series as she tries to settle into a new school, lean into her newly discovered psychic abilities while also investigating a series of unsolved murder.

🎭 The series is as dark and gory as Wednesday Addams is (literally), so you need to go in knowing this is comedy-horror. I am not a fan of horror movies but this makes an exception.
Jenna Ortega was just brilliant in this role and honorary mention to Emma Myers who plays Enid Sinclair, just the perfect cheer of side dish to this dark main course.

🍿 I found it to have too many moving parts, but all beautifully woven into one piece.
Also, the monologues were an important part of the series that I enjoyed watching.
And that dance? My favourite!

❓Trivia: Did you know the actor, Victor Dorobantu, who “plays” Thing 🫰🏼is an actual magician/illusionist

The wits find a way to distract from the horror and as such is a ▶️ for me.
